Producer: Michiaki Ikeda Production area: Tamato-cho, Tamana-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture Main product: Unshu mandarin oranges Use of pesticides: None Use of fertilizers: None

Michiaki Ikeda is engaged in natural farming in Gyokuto Town, Tamana District, Kumamoto Prefecture.
Gyokuto Town, located in the northern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, is famous for its mandarin oranges.
Since 2008, Mr. Ikeda has gradually switched his tangerine farm, which has been passed down for generations, to natural cultivation.
Since 2015, he has switched his entire farm to natural farming, and this achievement has earned him great renown throughout the country.

Fruit trees and other fruit-growing plants usually use larger amounts of pesticides and fertilizers than vegetables.
It is said that mandarin oranges are sprayed more than 40 times before harvest.
Mr. Ikeda has continued to cultivate his oranges naturally, without fertilizer or pesticides, despite having to overcome repeated challenges such as pests and diseases, in order to grow delicious mandarin oranges that even children can eat safely.

Kill without cutting

Weeds are growing abundantly under the tangerine trees in Ikeda's orchard.
The natural "grass mulch" that covers the grass under this tree apparently helps prevent the ground temperature from rising too quickly by blocking direct sunlight.
Other mandarin orange farmers say that their mandarin oranges have been suffering from sunburn this year, but by using this grass mulch and maintaining the ground temperature, Ikeda's mandarin oranges have not suffered from sunburn.
There was also no impact from the recent typhoon.
I was convinced by the words, "Natural farming is powerful."

Mr. Ikeda is well-versed in the names of insects and plants, and even explained the names of each weed to us.
Among them, there are many vines, which are highly treasured.
"The vine helps suppress other weeds. Also, as the number of vines increases, the tangerine trees become healthier. It works well by not cutting down the weeds."

They stopped mowing the grass 7 to 8 years ago, and instead of cutting the weeds, they allowed the plants to live and promote decomposition, which in turn increased the diversity of bacteria and living organisms, improving the condition of the soil. The tangerine trees themselves have become healthier, and are now more resistant to insects, diseases, and climate change.
In fact, it seems that the yield and quality of mandarin oranges are improving year by year. In recent years, the yields of early and late mandarin oranges have improved to the point where they are comparable to those of conventional cultivation.
"It took more than 10 years to get to this point. At one point, all the trees died due to insects," he said.

Naturally grown mandarins grow slowly and carefully. This results in dense fruit with a rich flavor. They have a good balance of sweetness, sourness and umami, and you'll find yourself reaching for two or three. This is a taste you won't find anywhere else.
