Naturally grown eggplants from Ueno, Kumamoto Prefecture

We have received naturally grown eggplants from Ueno in Kumamoto Prefecture.

We have continued to prepare the soil, and now in our seventh year of natural cultivation, the eggplants are full of weight and look very fine.
Ueno's eggplants are precious, grown naturally in Kyushu and self-seeded, and the seeds are collected every year.
There are many varieties of eggplants grown here, including red eggplant, true black eggplant, purple Gozen eggplant, and old-fashioned eggplant.
It has almost no bitter taste when eaten raw, and is delicious when boiled, pickled, or eaten as is with miso.
It is useful for any dish, such as mapo nasu, miso stir-fry, gratin, simmered dashi stock, and curry.

Red eggplant, a traditional vegetable of Kumamoto, looks large and firm,
The eggplant is soft and easy to eat, with few seeds and bitterness. It has a refreshing fragrance and is delicious even when eaten raw, simply by cutting it and soaking it in water.
The classic dish is grilled eggplant, which has a slight sweetness and a melt-in-your-mouth texture.
Alternatively, slice it thinly, soak it in water, drain it, sprinkle salt on it, leave it for a while, and then squeeze out the juice. It's delicious to mix it with finely chopped salt cob instead of salt to bring out the flavor and aroma of the cob.

*Please note that the type of eggplant delivered may change depending on the harvest conditions of the producing area.

Ueno has been committed to natural farming since he started farming

Masuhisa Ueno, a natural farmer, has now become an indispensable part of Purely.
He encountered Purely when he first began farming and has been farming using natural farming methods from the very beginning.

At first, the crops did not grow well and there were even reports of total destruction.
"At first, I didn't know anything about natural farming, so I just followed what I saw. But it didn't work at all. When I started growing onions here, almost all of them died after about two years."
Although Ueno can now laugh about his failures, he says that it was extremely difficult at the beginning.

Nevertheless, he has managed to look at his failures in a positive way, and has proactively participated in lectures sponsored by Purely and training sessions organized by the National Natural Farming Promotion Association.
"Looking back, this failure taught me the importance of soil preparation," he says, and he has continued to make steady progress.

Now, among Purely's partner producers, they produce a wide variety of naturally grown vegetables, which is one of the best.
Most of the produce is produced from seeds we collect ourselves or purchased fixed varieties, and we are committed to natural cultivation from seeds.
"I want to make natural farming a normal part of agriculture. I believe I can do it, and I want to continue spreading the word by continuing to focus solely on natural farming."

Ueno is passionate about natural farming and works hard at it every day.
Please enjoy our naturally grown red eggplants, which are full of Ueno's passion.
