[Organically grown Aiko tomatoes by Higo Ayumi Association]

Teruhiko Sawamura, the representative of the Higo Ayumi Association.

They are engaged in growing rice and vegetables naturally and organically on vast farmland in Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

Shiranui Town in Uki City, where Sawamura lives, is a small hill facing the sea. The area is also known for the Shiranui fires that appear every summer night in the Yatsushiro Sea.

Sawamura's dream is for "the Shiranui region to return to the way it was in the past, a place filled with bountiful crops and a thriving agricultural industry." He also has a strong desire to "make this a vibrant region where as many people as possible can be involved in agriculture and where agriculture supports people's lives."

In Japan, where people are increasingly turning away from agriculture, how can existing farmers make progress and enable their successors to pursue agriculture of their own volition? The aim is to create a true "agriculture" that can be passed down from parent to child, and from child to grandchild for generations.

The flesh is dense and firm, with less jelly inside, and it is a tomato with little sourness and a strong sweetness. Even one of Sawamura's Aiko tomatoes is satisfying to eat.
