We have received a limited quantity of naturally grown pears (Niitaka) from Arao City, Kumamoto Prefecture.
Niitaka is an old variety that is characterized by its good fragrance, elegant sweetness, and its size, which is about the size of a softball. The flesh is white, juicy, soft, and has a high sugar content.
This time we will be selling a limited number of very rare pears (Niitaka).

Takatsuka's pear orchard is located in Arao City, Kumamoto Prefecture, which faces the Ariake Sea to the west and prospered as a coal mining town, with the Manda Mine registered as a World Heritage Site. Arao City is famous for its pear production, with a history of pear cultivation dating back more than 100 years.
From a young age, he helped out his mother at her pear orchard, and when he retired from his job as a firefighter at the age of 60, he began a new challenge.
"It's good that we've taken all the bugs and typhoons with us."
When I visited in late June, the fruit had been thinned and bagged, and the remaining fruit had grown to about a size larger than a ping-pong ball.
Until 2020, we used fungicide once before the flowers bloomed, but we feel that the condition of the pear trees is improving every year, so from 2021 we have not used any chemicals and are watching the pears grow without the use of pesticides or fertilizers.
Caterpillars and mites can be seen here and there on the pear leaves, but as the amount of pesticide used has been reduced each year, the number of pests has also decreased.
Even if there are pests, there are insects that will eat them.
Rather than using chemicals in an inappropriate way and upsetting the balance of the ecosystem, they choose to trust in the insects' natural behavior and patiently watch over them.
Only recently has she come to the point where she can say, "It's okay, even if bugs and typhoons don't take all the pears away." (In Kumamoto dialect, this means "It's okay, even if bugs and typhoons don't take all the pears away.")
However, if longhorn beetles are left alone, they will lay eggs in the pear trees and the larvae will eat away at the inside of the tree.
If the trees can no longer suck up sap, they will become weak, so they check on them every day to prevent this.
The fruit is matured on the vine and then harvested and shipped at the best eating time.
Mowing in the garden is kept to a minimum, and grass is intentionally left to act as a natural mulch to prevent the soil from drying out, and the dead grass fertilizes the soil.
In addition to pears, they planted broadleaf trees which they use to grow shiitake mushrooms on logs, and they started growing vegetables without the use of pesticides or fertilizers.For the first time in about 20 years, fireflies were flying in from the stream below the pear orchard and fluttering around the orchard.
Takatsuka's challenge continues, so that the scenery that was commonplace during Takatsuka's childhood, before the period of high economic growth, can once again be seen in this pear orchard, and so that the next generation can experience that scenery.
