Mochi barley has a hard outer skin that cannot be peeled off with a normal polishing machine, so it is polished using a special machine.
Takayuki Otsuka of Kikuyo Town, Kumamoto Prefecture Kikuyo Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, where Otsuka grows his produce, is a production area for carrots and sweet potatoes. The soil contains a lot of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Aso, so it has excellent drainage and is ideal for field crops.
Otsuka-san was born in 1937. He has been involved in agriculture for over 60 years, trying out various farming methods before finally settling on natural farming without the use of pesticides or fertilizers.
Currently, Kikuyo Town produces carrots and sweet potatoes, but in the past, wheat and beans were cultivated in large quantities. The soil is well-drained so that even if it rains, machinery can be used to work on the land the next day, and it is also suitable for growing wheat and beans.
