[Harvested in 2023] Hinohikari rice grown naturally by Shinichi Taniguchi from Kumamoto Prefecture

熊本県玉名市 谷口伸一さん 自然栽培米ヒノヒカリ
Tamana City is located in the northern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, in the Kikuchi River basin (Kikuchi City, Yamaga City, Nagomi Town, Tamana City), where rice has been grown for 2,000 years. During the Edo period, rice was presented to the shogun, and even today it continues to be highly regarded in the country, making it one of Japan's leading rice-producing areas.
Tamana City, located in the lower reaches of the Kikuchi River, has fertile soil rich in nutrients, and agriculture, including rice cultivation, is thriving here.
Taniguchi's rice fields are located near the home of Kaneguri Shiso, who is well known for appearing in the historical drama "Idaten," where he spent his later years. In fact, Taniguchi learned marathon running from Kaneguri Shiso when he was a child.

From the age of 20, Taniguchi joined a group that studied environmental conservation agriculture and food additives.
His family has been rice farmers for generations, but Taniguchi began growing rice without pesticides and using the Aigamo farming method 40 years ago when he was 20 years old.
The reason he decided to start natural farming was largely due to the presence of Chikayoshi Tomita, who he has known for a long time and who has also helped him at Purely.
Originally, they grew their rice with as little fertilizer and compost as possible, but they became concerned about the fact that adding even a small amount of fertilizer could cause insects such as aphids to appear and the rice plants to become diseased, so 15 years ago they switched to completely natural farming.

This year, there was a massive infestation of rice plants in the surrounding rice fields, but Taniguchi's rice field was unaffected and is growing well.

Taniguchi-san said, "I am filled with gratitude that there are people who eat my food." Taniguchi-san is a humble person.

◇Purely's commitment to naturally grown rice◇

At Purely, we only deliver naturally grown rice from trusted natural farms in Kyushu.
All naturally grown rice we deliver meets the following three conditions.

1. No pesticides or fertilizers (chemical or organic) are used.
2. The seeds used are all naturally grown rice that farmers continue to collect themselves.
3. We only use naturally grown rice that has a history of 3 years or more in natural cultivation fields (natural cultivation history in rice fields).

Our production staff meets with each farmer, sees the rice fields in person, and checks the field and production history.
After repeated quality checks and investigations into production history, we purchase directly from contracted natural farming farmers in Kyushu who we can trust and rely on.

In addition to simply purchasing produce, we also serve as the Kyushu Block Secretariat of the National Natural Farming Extension Association and regularly hold study sessions, discussion meetings and lectures on natural farming for farmers.
We also offer agricultural tours and natural life schools for consumers, including rice planting, rice harvesting, mochi pounding, and other agricultural support tours, in an effort to promote natural farming and natural lifestyles.

At Purely, we aim to spread the worldview of natural farming by working together as a trinity of consumers, producers, and distributors, and to realize a sustainable society in harmony with nature.

◇Purely's thoughts on natural cultivation◇

Natural farming does not use any pesticides or fertilizers, has no environmental impact on the earth, and is a form of agriculture that connects us to the future.
Rice and vegetables grown naturally grow slowly and steadily using the natural power of the plants.
And they grow into vibrant, delicious crops.
Eating naturally grown rice and vegetables contributes to the health of those who eat them and also purifies the earth.
We want to spread the world of natural farming throughout Japan.
We also want to support farmers who practice natural farming.

Because natural farming does not rely on pesticides or fertilizers, it is more susceptible to risks such as disease, insects, and climate change.
It takes a lot of time and effort, including soil preparation, seed collection, weeding, and quality control.
On the other hand, in markets such as JA, they are sometimes sold at the same price as regular crops.

We deal directly with contracted farmers without going through the market.
This creates a system that ensures that farmers receive a fair profit and can continue to practice natural farming with peace of mind.
By eating naturally grown rice and vegetables through Purely, you will be helping to promote the spread of agriculture that will lead to the future, and will be supporting farmers who continue to strive for natural farming.
And best of all, it will lead to a healthier life for you and your family.

If you share Purely's philosophy and the benefits of naturally grown rice, we hope you will continue to do business with us for a long time to come.
