Yuji Fukushima's citrus farm
Minamata City is located in the southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture.
The mountain slopes extend directly from the sea, allowing the area to be bathed in plenty of sunlight.
Fukushima Yuji's orchard is located in this area, where citrus fruits have long been cultivated.
Mr. Fukushima grows a wide variety of citrus fruits at a citrus farm that has been in operation for generations.
Fukushima-san has been growing lemons naturally without fertilizer or pesticides for the past 8 years. Lemons are valuable just because they are domestically grown, but fertilizer- and pesticide-free lemons are extremely rare, making them even more valuable.
Four years ago, a severe cold wave killed almost all of the lemons in the prefecture, but Fukushima's lemon orchard was protected by the sea breeze and managed to withstand the cold.
The lemon trees were full of fruit.
Fukushima says, "We were able to have a good harvest this year. It's a relief to see the trees growing year by year, but at the same time, I can picture the faces of our customers who support us. With so many people planning to eat our produce, we can't use pesticides. We're particular about our cultivation methods, and we hope to improve the balance between quality and taste."
Naturally grown lemons are delicious when eaten raw, and you can safely use them with the skin on.
You can feel a slight natural sweetness even in the sourness.
You'll be amazed at how delicious it is.
Of course, you can use it in cooking, but since it is completely fertilizer- and pesticide-free, you can also squeeze it with the skin on and use it as a variety of seasonings or juice.
Simply roughly chop it, add sugar and boil it down to easily make organic lemon syrup.
"I live in Minamata, Kumamoto, and a long time ago, Minamata disease caused concern to people all over the country. Environmental pollution in particular must never be allowed to happen again. We are well aware of the horror of environmental pollution, so there are many organizations that are enthusiastic about organic farming, and Minamata is a place where there is a particularly large amount of information available to each other."
Minamata City in Kumamoto Prefecture has a history of the Minamata disease problem, which was officially recognized in 1956, but it is also an environmentally friendly city that has faced the problem as a whole region and achieved recovery.
Due to this influence, many farmers have started to work on environmental conservation-based agriculture in recent years, and among them, Mr. Fukushima is leading the way as a pioneer. The skin on the surface may be irregular, and there may be some scratches or spots that occurred during the growth process.
Please rest assured that there is no problem with the taste or consumption.
